THE WELL

This old well predates the main house located on this farm. The house was built in the 1860s. This well probably was built along with a log cabin and could date as early as the late 18th century.

In the Middle East one of the most authentic Biblical artifacts believed to exist today is Jacob’s well, located at what use to be Shechem. Shechem, which in the Greek was called Sychar, was located in Samaria. The well can be seen today and is visited by tourist. God’s Word tells us about this location and a conversation between Jesus and the “Samaritan lady at the well”.
John 4:6-7…Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with [his] journey, sat thus on the well: [and] it was about the sixth hour.

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

The Samaritan woman was surprised that Jesus spoke to her and had asked her for some water. Jesus tells her about water that truly satisfies.
John 4:14…But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.

The custom of that area was that the women would go to the well and draw water for the household every day. It was a chore that this lady wanted to resolve. She asked Jesus to give her some of that water.
John 4:15…The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

Of course our Lord was talking about Spiritual thirst verses physical thirst.
The Bible uses this metaphor in other places. Look at Jer. 2:13…For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, [and] hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

As you can see before you, the well located at Shechem Ministries is full of rotten leaves and dirt. It serves no purpose. But the Water that God gives us is pure and satisfying. The problem is we want to do things our way and dig our own sources of fulfillment. We need to let God lead us and depend upon him to satisfy our needs. We need to deny ourselves.
If we drink of the water He gives us instead of water from our own sources, we can have the peace that He wants us to have.

John 4:14…But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
